General information about the middle and south of Carinthia
Carinthia, in the most southern part of Austria, is a province with beautiful lakes, wide mountain ranges, sparkling streams, beautiful green fields, many historic monuments and a sunny climate. It’s not surprising it’s so popular!
Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, has an airport and many works of art and buildings designed by Italian masters. In the south there are the magnificent mountain ranges of the Karnische Alps and the Karawanks; a challenge for mountain climbers! The Rosen, Lesach and Gailtal valleys are at the foot of the mountains and the Drau and Gail are large rivers in the area. The Hohe Tauern National Park is in the north of the province, and within it the highest mountain of Carinthia – the Grossglockner (3798m).
There are about two hundred lakes in Carinthia, with a water temperature sometimes as high as 28 degrees Celsius. Lake Ossiach, Millstätter and Faaker, with their wide range of water sports activities, are popular from May until the middle of October with Austrian and foreign holidaymakers alike.
The popular ‘Kärnten Card’, which gives admission to more than 100 attractions such as museums, zoos and boat trips, is available in the summer months. For more information go to: http://www.kaerntencard.at
A lot of people don’t think of Carinthia as a skiing destination even though the drive there isn’t that much further than to other skiing areas. And it has all the facilities that other popular ski resorts have.
There is also plenty to do for those who don’t ski or snowboard. There is an extensive network of walking and cross country skiing routes. You can also go for a walk on snow shoes or take a ride in a horse- or husky- drawn sleigh and skate on the frozen lakes. And at the end of an active day outdoors, you can warm up with a drink in one of the cosy huts or enjoy the warm water in the Carinthian thermal baths.
The cities of Villach and Klagenfurt have a beautiful centre, shopping malls, many pavement cafes, cinemas and large furniture shops and multimedia shops.
Carinthia is part of the Alpe-Adria region which also includes the Austrian state of Styria, Slovenia and the Italian regions of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and Veneto. The Adriatic Coast is only an hour and a half’s drive away and you can get to Venice within two hours.
The people from Carinthia are friendly and warm and are a little Italian in nature. They eat out regularly, and the menus do not only have traditional Austrian dishes on them, such as ‘Jause’ (a snack of cold meat and cheese from local farmers), but also fish and Italian dishes.
